One of the questions that I am getting more and more used to hearing lately is:

‘Is it too late for me to start an online business? Have I missed the boat and have all of the best opportunities been and gone?’

My reply is always along the lines of, ‘Absolutely not - there is still a wealth of opportunity online and even if you start your online business tomorrow, you are still well ahead of the majority of people’.

I genuinely believe that this is the case but I know that many people do feel that they may have missed the boat and that there is nothing more that can be done online that isn’t already being done by someone else. If you are one of those people, read on….

I attended a corporate function last week - non Internet related - and had the chance to talk with a large number of UK business men and women. These people ranged from people running their own ‘one man band’ type business right up to the owners of large-scale operations employing hundreds of staff and turning over millions of pounds each year. Several of the attendees were entrepreneurs that had built up and sold companies worth, quite literally, tens of millions. Overall, a very wide spread of experience, success and ability but the one thing that tied everyone together was that they were all running a business of one kind or another.

Now, as you would expect, when meeting with new people for the first time (and particularly in a situation such as the one above), one of the main topics of conversation was what everyone did for a living. As I have indicated in previous newsletters, this is a question that I really dislike being asked as I find it so hard to explain.

Needless to say though, I found myself having to do exactly that to numerous people, all of whom looked at me with a blank expression as I tried to tell them, in simple terms, how I generate an income from nothing more than a PC and the Internet.

This is nothing new and I am well used to it by now (in fact I am beginning to think that it would be easier just to say I work in finance as I once did!) but what amazed me most was that not one of the people I spoke to had any clue about what I was talking about.

Despite being among a group of what I would consider to be a fair representation of the UK business community, not one of them had any real idea about how to use the Internet to increase their business.

Of course, many of the people I spoke to had websites but ALL of them told me that the only real purpose their website served was to provide a small amount of information about their business and their contact details!

None of them allowed customers to order from their website (although most of the businesses in question would suit this method of sales)….

None of them were collecting email addresses from visitors with the aim of carrying out follow-up marketing (although this would be appropriate for all of the businesses in question)….

None of the businesses were using email in any way as a form of marketing, despite the obvious cost advantages over the postal service…

I could go on but I think you get the point.

On the flipside, every single one of the people that I spoke to had used the Internet to purchase goods! I find this absolutely amazing.

Now of course, the people that I spoke to are in a slightly different situation to many online entrepreneurs in that they already run successful offline businesses. However, if this is a fair representation of how entrepreneurs view the Internet in terms of a business tool, it stands to reason that the ‘ordinary man in the street’ will be even less likely to see the Internet as something that he can use to earn a full or part time income.

The entrepreneurs I spoke to were genuinely surprised that it was possible to earn a full time income online, they were even more surprised when I gave them an indication of how much it is possible to earn. I am sure that a couple of them almost fell over when I then told them that the day to day maintenance of many online businesses takes just an hour or so per day since software can be used to handle so much of the workload!

I therefore reiterate the point that I made at the start of this newsletter - the Internet Gold rush is surely only just beginning and the very fact that you are reading this article puts you way ahead of the vast majority of the rest of the World. Don’t sit there wondering whether it is too late - get started on your online business today.

And if you were one of the entrepreneurs that I spoke to last week (you know who you are and I know that several of you have already subscribed to this newsletter!), welcome and enjoy - you too are now one step ahead of your competition :-)

I’m going to show you some of the tips that I use to generate thousands from my website every single month using just AdSense. Last month AdSense paid me over eleven thousand dollars and I’m going to show you how I did it.

The first thing you need to get right with AdSense is the correct ad format. That means the size of ad, the shape of ad and the colors that you use. Everyone knows that the more you can blend your ad into your websites color scheme, the more clicks you’ll get. You need to make your ads look almost as if they’re not actually ads. You’re not trying to trick people, because with each of the ads Google itself will have the description ‘Ads by Google’ so people will know they are adverts. Your job is to make your ads fit in so well with your website that people don’t fall prey to what is called banner or advertising blindness.

Some formats that work best are the skyscraper formats and also the 728 leaderboards and larger formats. If you use these formats, you should try and make the linking text for the headline to be the same color as other links on your website. Also if you have the text of the actual URL, you’ll notice that at the bottom of every ad is the actual web address. If you make that web address on AdSense the same color as the description text, that also works very well. What that does is make the headline of each ad actually jump out from the page and it encourages people to click on it. That’s another way you can get more people to click on your ads.

The other thing that you can do is to research the highest paying key phrases. You probably have a website full of content already and you’ve placed the AdSense code onto those pages so that you can start getting revenue every time somebody clicks on an ad. Now that’s fine, but what you can start to do is actually create and find content and key phrases that produce the highest paying ads.

Now I know for a fact that from all the clicks that I get there are some that generate a couple of cents per click, but there are also ads on my site that actually produce several dollars every time someone clicks on them. The key to making it big with AdSense is to get your hands on those high-paying keywords. You can find some of these out for free, but as with most things you get what you pay for. Free lists aren’t worth anything and they definitely aren’t worth your time.

There are hundreds and thousands of ways to get traffic to your adsense websites or your blogs but one of the best ways to get traffic is to use articles which is also a free method, when writing an article on your chosen topic you get to leave a by-line at the bottom with a link back to your chosen website.

The by-line is also known as a signature or sig-line, when writing out your by-line you need to make sure that it has a catchy headline and a good description as once people have finished reading your article they will see the sig-line at the bottom and then read your headline & description and then possibly click through to your website this is known as targeted traffic.

Once you have written your article on your chosen topic you will then need to distribute the article by submitting the article to directories, there are dozens and dozens of article directories out there some of the popular ones are:

EzineArticles.com

ArticleCity.com

Isnear.com

There are hundreds more but the top three above are the most popular ones. If you need to find more then go to your favourite search engine, just type in article directories and it will bring up a list of thousands.

When submitting your articles to the directories a few things happen; the first thing is that the articles will bring you targeted traffic as long as you have a by-line, when you leave your by-line attached to the articles then other websites take your articles and add them to their own website leaving your by-line in tact.

Now when this happens the by-line link in your article becomes what is known to the search engines as a “back link” the more “back links” you have the higher you rank in the search engines which is another good reason to write articles and distribute them.

Just by submitting your article to the above three can bring you in an extra 50-200 targeted visitors per month and more depending on the quality of the article.
If you can write one to two articles per week then you can be looking at receiving 200-1000 visitors to your adsense websites per month. The more articles you write the more traffic you will receive.

Also just like to mention that articles do not have to be very long they can be anything from 300 words to 1000 words most articles are about 450 - 700 words long, the reason is that you keep your articles short so that once the visitor has read your article they get the information within a few minutes and then they will possibly visit your website to find out more on their chosen topic or to discover more about your website and even you.

Once the visitors have arrived at your website they will be more likely to click on your adsense ads and your affiliate programs which will bring home the money.
Not only will you receive targeted traffic to your adsense websites but you will also be recognised as the expert in the field that you’re writing about, articles are a great way to get your name out onto the Internet as people by things from people they trust.

If you cannot write an article then don’t panic because there are other ways to get articles written for your adsense websiters.
